Mycrobez, a Basel-based clean-tech startup, is revolutionizing the packaging- and construction-industry by supplying a price-competitive and completely biodegradable material-alternative to Styrofoam®, Medium-density fiber boards, and plastics: mushroom-based composites (mycelium composites). They achieve this with their innovative bioprocess and by automating the whole production process.

Mycrobez is seeking a highly skilled

Bio Process Engineer

with expertise in fermentation processes, bioreactor design and building, mycology, media and parameter optimization, and wet lab experience. The Bio Process Engineer should have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering and physics, as well as sensorics, and be able to work on large reaction vessels, automated warehouse systems, and process automation. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and optimizing fermentation processes, designing and building bioreactors, and improving biological efficacy through media and parameter optimization, strain selection, and lab testing. Additionally, the Bio Process Engineer will develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, work with the automation team and collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, Manufacturing, and Quality Control to ensure seamless technology transfer and process scale-up.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize fermentation processes, including media and parameter optimization, strain selection, and lab testing
  • Design and build bioreactors and large reaction vessels
  • Conduct experiments and write scientific reports to support process development and optimization
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all processes and equipment
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless technology transfer and process scaleup

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in fermentation processes, bioreactor design, and mycology
  • Experience with media and parameter optimization, strain selection, and lab testing
  • Basic understanding of mechanical engineering and physics, as well as sensorics
  • Wet lab experience and expertise in experiment design and scientific report writing
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
